F.A.Q.s
What do Adopt-A-Street groups do?
Organizations are asked to complete three tasks:
Community clean up: Once per month (as weather permits), representatives from the participating organization will clean up the litter that has accumulated in areas along their adopted street. Participants are not required to clean trash from private properties (i.e.: yards) as this is the responsibility of the residents of those homes/buildings. Sidewalks, tree lines and curbs are all places from where participants are asked to collect litter.
Distribute literature: Once per quarter, participating organizations are asked to deliver "lit bags" filled with helpful information for off-campus residents. Such information will include: Safety information and current crime alerts, activity calendars, special give-away items, off-campus services information and other "need to know" announcements. The staff of Off-Campus Student Services will prepare this information and participating organizations will deliver it to the houses and apartment complexes located on their adopted street.
Community partnerships: Participating organizations will be called upon occasionally to work with other community leaders in the University District. Community Ambassadors, University District organizations, Student Governments, and community businesses are examples of groups who may call upon Adopt-A-Street participating organizations to assist with community projects related to the Adopt-A-Street mission. We ask that, as a group who is committed to improving the quality of life in the off-campus area, you remain open to working with these various groups.
Where can I drop-off my recycling?
If you are interested in recycling there are a number of drop-off locations in the Univeristy District and in the greater Columbus area. Please visit SWACO (the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio at http://www.swaco.org/ for more information regarding recycling drop-off locations and materials acceptable for recycling.
Who administers the program?
Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) is responsible for to maintaining and supporting the Adopt-A-Street program. OCSS works closely with OSU community relations as well as student groups who wish to improve the quality of life in the off-campus area. OCSS will recruit participant organizations, track the performance of these organizations and provide training and technical assistance to organizations. OCSS will provide needed materials for clean up and literature distribution and will be a point of contact for the Adopt-A-Street Coordinators of each participating organization.
**For each activity completed by the participating organization (i.e. litter clean up or literature distribution) the Adopt-A-Street Coordinator should complete an Adopt-A-Street Report Form and submit it to Off-Campus Student Services.
Keep Columbus Beautiful provides assistance for clean up activities, in the form of garbage bags, gloves (which will be stored at OCSS for convenience) and the coordination of trash pick-up with the city's Refuse Collection Division.
Who can participate?
Any registered student organization is eligible to adopt a street. The program should be of interest to organizations that are service oriented: the Greek community, class honoraries, student governments, service groups and others. Each participating organization will appoint an Adopt-A-Street Coordinator, who will be responsible for leading them in their service, completing a few administrative tasks and staying in contact with Off-Campus Student Services.

Why is Adopt-A-Street an ideal project for OSU student organizations?
The Adopt-A-Street program is ideal for student organizations that are interested in completing service projects for several reasons.
The program is geared toward students and their schedules; it allows groups to be flexible with scheduling clean-up and literature drop activities. Groups are not expected to complete clean-ups over breaks (such as summer). The same students are not required to do the service each time, so groups can be accommodating with group members about who participates and when they do so. Cleaning up litter and distributing information is not extremely strenuous task. On average, litter clean-ups require an hour and literature drops require a half hour depending on the number of students participating. These service projects help to improve the quality of life in the off-campus area.
