Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program for Students
The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program is a comprehensive Student Life initiative designed to improve the quality of off-campus life, enhance the vibrancy of the University area, and create an extraordinary off-campus experience by meeting and exceeding student needs. The program is currently offered for properties within the University District boundaries (Arcadia Ave. to 5th Ave., and Olentangy River to the railroad tracks).
Student Life, through Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services, launched the Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program to:
- Reduce off-campus risks and hazards by providing students with information and strategies that enhance personal safety and home security,
- Lower utility costs and raise environmental awareness by promoting sustainable living, and
- Help students and their families make well-informed decisions about off-campus housing options.
The purpose of the Excellence Program is to equip students with the knowledge needed to live in an off-campus environment, and to improve the quality of off-campus life by reducing safety risks and hazards.
The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program consists of 3 components: home visits, education, and enhanced rental property information.
- Home visits conducted by Student Life's OCCSS Program Manager and Columbus Fire Department
Student Life has partnered with the Columbus Fire Department to assess off-campus safety, security and sustainability. Any student renting property in the University District can request a free home visit. During each home visit, Student Life and Columbus Fire Department representatives will assess the property, offer free safety devices, and discuss proactive safety and security strategies and answer resident questions. Participation is voluntary and free.
- Off-campus housing, living, and safety education
Student Life provides off-campus housing, living, and safety classes to First and Second Year students. Through the First Year Success Series, OCCSS presents two classes: "Moving Off-Campus: Leasing, Landlords, and Lots More," and "Safety On and Off Campus." Through the Second Year Transformational Experience Program, OCCSS presents "Safety On and Off Campus." These classes are designed to provide essential life skills education and reinforce important safety lessons.
- Enhanced rental property information
The rental listings of landlords that participate in the Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program will contain the results of the home visits. Each rental unit visited through the program can receive up to 5 buckeyes for safety, security, and operations, and 1 green buckeye for sustainability.
The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program was created in collaboration with students, parents, property owners/managers, and city and University officials to address the unique needs and interests of the off-campus community. The program is voluntary and both students and property owners/manager can participate.
Student Life programs and services foster student learning and development, enhance the educational experience, and prepare students for their chosen professions and to be contributing members of a diverse society.
