Moving Out and Moving On

Moving out of your rental property can be a very hectic time, but there are a number of essential steps you need to take prior to and during the move-out process:

  • Make sure you have provided prior notice to your property manager for when you will be vacating the premises. Some property managers require 60 days or more notice, but to find out your property manager's policy, check your lease and call to make sure you have notified them appropriately. Remember: Even if you verbally notify the property manager, you must still provide this notice in writing!
  • Provide your property manager with a forwarding address, so that they know where to mail your security deposit (preferably send this certified mail), and always keep a copy for your records.
  • Clean your apartment/house thoroughly! Remember: Your property manager can deduct money from your security deposit for damages and items not properly cleaned.
  • Fill out a move-out checklist, documenting the condition of the property once you have moved out. Send a copy to your property manager and make sure to keep a copy for your own records.
  • Take pictures and video of the unit. When video-taping the unit, make sure to document the date (i.e. Hold a newspaper from that day and videotape this). NOTE: When video-taping, make sure to do this in one taping (do not pause or stop the tape at any time!).
  • Don't forget to return the keys to the property manager by the end of the lease term!
  • Always dispose of your trash properly!

Bulk Items

Bulk items are not collected unless the resident schedules a bulk pick-up collection. Some large items cannot be thrown away because they are too big to fit in the trash container. Residents should contact the City's 311 Call Center at 614-645-3111 or visit the 311 Columbus website. Bulk items include, but are not limited to:

  • Furniture
  • Lamps
  • Carpet
  • Mattresses

Return of Your Security Deposit

  • Your property manager is required to return your security deposit, or an itemized list of deductions, within 30 days of the end of the lease term (assuming they were provided with your forwarding address in writing before the lease term was over). If you are having issues with the return of your security deposit, contact the Student Legal Services office at 614-247-5853.
  • If you believe your security deposit is wrongfully withheld, contact the Student Legal Services office for assistance.
