The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program is a comprehensive Student Life initiative designed to improve the quality of off-campus life, enhance the vibrancy of the University area, and create an extraordinary off-campus experience by meeting and exceeding student needs.  The program is currently offered for properties within the University District boundaries (N: Arcadia Ave., S: 5th Ave., W: Olentangy River, E: railroad tracks).

Program Goals:

  1. Reduce off-campus risks and hazards by providing students with information and strategies that enhance personal safety and home security.
  2. Lower utility costs and raise environmental awareness by promoting sustainable living.
  3. Help students and their families make well-informed decisions about off-campus housing options.

Any Ohio State student renting or landlord that has property in the University District can request a home walk-through any time throughout the entire calendar year. If you are a student, you want to learn more about the program, and you want to schedule your home walk-through, click here and select the best time and date that works for you.

The purpose of the Excellence Program is to equip students with the knowledge needed to live in an off-campus environment, and to improve the quality of off-campus life by reducing safety risks and hazards.

 Program Components

The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program consists of 3 components: home walk-throughs, education, and enhanced rental property information.

Home walk-throughs conducted by Student Life's OCCSS Program Manager and Columbus Division of Fire

Any student renting property in the University District can request a free home walk-through. During each appointment, Student Life and Columbus Fire Department representatives will:

  • Assess the property
  • Offer free safety devices
  • Discuss proactive safety and security strategies
  • Answer resident questions

The team will offer recommendations related to safety, security and sustainability; a full list of the assessment criteria can be found here.  Participation is voluntary and free.

Off-campus housing, living, and safety education

Student Life provides off-campus housing, living, and safety classes to First and Second Year students.  Through the First Year Success Series, OCCSS presents two classes: "Moving Off-Campus: Leasing, Landlords, and Lots More," and "Safety On and Off Campus."  Through the Second Year Transformational Experience Program, OCCSS presents "Safety On and Off Campus."  These classes are designed to provide essential life skills education and reinforce important safety lessons.

Enhanced rental property information

The rental listings of landlords that participate in the Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program will contain the results of the home visits.  By focusing on safety, security and sustainability in off-campus rental properties, Student Life aims to enhance the quality and amount of information available to students moving off campus.  Each rental unit visited through the program can receive up to 5 buckeyes for safety, security, and operations, and 1 green buckeye for sustainability.  For a listing of available properties that have had a home walk-through within the last 12 months, click here.

Additional Information

The Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program was created in collaboration with students, parents, property owners/managers, and city and University officials to address the unique needs and interests of the off-campus community.  The program is voluntary and both students and property owners/manager can participate.
