Willie Young, Sr. was a unique gift! The Office of Diversity and Inclusion's (ODI) graduate and professional students knew they could call him. He gave his special treatment, shuttling to find off campus housing. A critical bridge from respective homes to this giant place, they benefitted from his campuswide contacts. One so dedicated, this serious university ambassador wore his scarlet and gray with dignity and pride! His unwavering support allowed him a seat for years on ODI's annual National Conference planning committee. Willie and I served on the executive board of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals since 2000. His brilliance, his persona -- brought substantive discourse. My life has been indelibly enriched; indeed a privilege to know him. He gave all!

My favorite memory of Willie was when I went on a couple of ride-alongs in the University district on a Friday or Saturday night. The number of students who would yell, "Hey Willie!" from their houses and then come to say hello was inspiring. Willie was my colleague, friend and mentor for "120 years of service." I miss him.

Gosh! Many Monday meetings with Willie resulted in laughter, curiosity and sometimes a show (astrology, magic, predictions you name it). Willie gave me my first Block O pin and somehow would run into me often in the parking garage. He'd lean up near the boom gate ask me all about my day and together we'd wave hello or goodbye to the individuals coming in and out. I think of you often Willie and have no doubt you are still keeping an eye on the neighborhoods!

I didn't know Willie that well, but whenever we ran into each other he was always smiling. It's rare you meet an individual who has such a positive outlook on life. His smile could carry you through a very long day.

I sat next to Willie at a conference. He analyzed my handwriting and told me amusing insights into my personality. After that chance encounter, I included Willie in my work network. I would double check with Willie if what the graduate and professional admissions office was saying to commuter applicants was on the mark. Willie was a caring and unique soul who cared about our students. I miss his humor and perspective.
