Move Out/Move In
City of Columbus and OSU Continue Partnership Offering Extra Trash Collection and Sustainability Options for Students Move Out/Move In
Drop-off and Recycle Locations throughout the Off-Campus Area Start July 24
It’s the time of year when old leases for off-campus apartments are ending and new leases are starting. Many students will move in, and move out, through July and August. It also means a huge amount of trash and other items may be discarded in the process.
The City of Columbus, in partnership with The Ohio State University Office of Student Life and the University District Organization, will offer nearly 50 temporary collection sites to serve students moving out of or into off-campus housing before fall semester starts. The annual effort supports sustainability, prevents illegal dumping and adds convenience for students by collecting extra trash, recyclables and bulk furniture.
In addition, students can donate gently used and laundered clothing to the Monda Student Resource Center’s Reid Family Career Closet in the bin outside their location in the Younkin Success Center. Students can drive into the alley behind Younkin and call the MSRC at 614-688-2508. A volunteer will collect the donations directly from the car.
The city’s Division of Refuse Collection manages the massive Move Out/Move In operations in the off-campus area. From July 24 to August 11, drop-off collection locations will be designated for household trash, large items such as furniture and mattresses, cardboard boxes and other recyclables. Furniture and other items in good shape will be donated for reuse.
Refuse Collection also operates the city’s Waste and Reuse Convenience Centers, 2100 Alum Creek Dr. and 1550 Georgesville Rd., where students may drop off many acceptable items for reuse, recycling, donation or proper disposal, including mattresses, furniture, electronics, food scraps and recyclables. This list of the temporary Refuse Collection drop-off facilities in the University District indicates what items are accepted at each location from July 24 to August 11. All locations are set up on the street, or in the alley or parking lot behind the address unless otherwise noted.
