Update

Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities will be administered in compliance with the law as of June 27, 2025.

Move Out/Move In

City of Columbus and OSU Continue Partnership Offering Extra Trash Collection and Sustainability Options for Students Move Out/Move In

Drop-off and Donate Locations throughout the Off-Campus Area Start July 25

If you are moving in or out of the University District this summer, you’ll find more than two dozen extra collection locations where you can drop off items for reuse, recycling or proper disposal. This helps prevent illegal dumping and unnecessary landfilling of items such as gently used furniture, housewares and clothing that can be donated for reuse.

The City of Columbus will provide the collection locations beginning July 25 as part of an ongoing partnership with Student Life’s Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement and the University District Organization.

The Move Out/Move In collection locations will be operated and serviced by the city’s Division of Refuse Collection from July 25 through August 11. In addition, the division’s Waste and Reuse Convenience Centers at 2100 Alum Creek Dr. and 1550 Georgesville Rd. offer residents free, year-round drop-off collection of many items for reuse, recycling or disposal.

Bulk items such as mattresses, furniture, appliances, electronics, food scraps and recyclables are accepted at the city’s Convenience Centers. Furniture and clothing in good condition and bicycles maybe donated there, too. Get more information and hours of operation at https://www.columbus.gov/Services/Trash-Recycling-Bulk-Collection.

“Our successful partnership with Ohio State and the University District Organization provides a valuable service to students at the height of moving into and out of off-campus housing,” said Director Kelly Scocco of the city’s Department of Public Service. “The extra locations set up by Refuse Collection allow for efficient services to prevent dumping in the campus area. It preserves landfill space and gives students convenient sustainability options.”

The city’s Move Out/Move In locations will collect bagged household trash and smaller items, bulk items like furniture and mattresses, and recyclables including cardboard dropped off by students. All locations will be monitored and serviced often by Refuse Collection staff.

"The annual Move Out/Move In operation is an impressive collaborative effort to help maintain the cleanliness of University District neighborhoods during this busy time. We are proud to partner with the City of Columbus and Ohio State to provide convenient disposal, recycling, and donation options for an easy moving experience, and to proactively prevent disruptive messes for residents and visitors," said Nora Gerber, Executive Director of the University District Organization.

This list identifies what items are acceptable for drop-off at these temporary Refuse Collection locations from July 25 through August 11. All collection locations are on-street or in the alley behind the address unless noted otherwise.

Household trash must be bagged. Trash bags and smaller items being disposed must be placed in the dumpster, not outside it, to prevent littering and blocked access when city refuse trucks lift and empty the dumpsters.
